A commitment across generations
For Mac and Jenne Drysdale, supporting young people has never been about a single organisation or moment in time. It is a commitment shaped by generations of relationships in the rural Queensland town of Augathella, located around 700 kilometres west of Brisbane, and a belief in what every young person can achieve. That belief has guided Mac’s decades-long connection with Yalari. As a former Chair, longstanding donor, sponsor and advocate, he has helped create pathways for young people to access a quality education while remaining connected to their families, communities and culture.This year, that connection comes full circle as Doug, a young man from Augathella whose family the Drysdales have known for generations, prepares to graduate as a Yalari scholar.
At his recent Yalari Graduation, Doug shared his thoughts about the impact others have had on his journey and his desire to create that same impact for others in the future.
“If I ever get the opportunity, I will pay it forward.”
It’s a sentiment that echoes the values Mac and Jenne have championed for many years, with young people going on to support others and strengthen their communities in turn.
Shaped by community
For the Drysdales, support for Yalari is grounded in values that have been passed down through generations. Perola Park, near Augathella, has been home to five generations of the family since 1915. Over that time, relationships with Aboriginal families from the region have been woven into the fabric of community life.
Looking back, Mac credits a good education, time spent on Country and the influence of those around him with shaping his outlook. Most importantly, he says, he was taught the importance of caring for others and contributing to community.
When asked why he continues to support Yalari after so many years, his answer is simple:
“It’s about people. Good people who need a hand to reach their full potential. What is there not to like?”
Carrying it forward
Earlier this year, Mac and his family made a gift to Yalari Ready and a donation in memory of his granddaughter, Abbey.
Known for her empathy and care for others, Abbey shared a special connection with Doug’s family, making Yalari a meaningful way for the Drysdales to honour her memory – a decision embraced across generations of the family.
Alongside their support of Yalari, the family has established the Abbey Currie Memorial Trust at Toowoomba Anglican School, continuing Abbey’s spirit of care for others through education.
Giving young people a chance
When asked what he would say to others considering supporting Yalari, his response is immediate:“Do it. We are helping people who will make a positive difference for generations to come.”After a lifetime of supporting young people, Mac’s message is both simple and powerful:
“Give them a chance. They just need opportunities to show us what they are capable of.”
