99% of Yalari scholars surveyed in our Social Impact Study transitioned to university, further education or employment post graduation.

69% of our students who start Year 7, complete Year 12, which is above the national average of 56% for all other Indigenous students regardless of where they live.

Alumni Todd's story

Growing up on a farm in the outback mining town of Lightning Ridge, Todd Ellis received a Yalari scholarship to Toowoomba Grammar School in 2008 graduating in 2013.

“If I’d stayed in Lightning Ridge, I probably would’ve left school in Year 10 to work on the farm full-time… Lightning Ridge only had a small school and, once in high school, had limited opportunity in and out of school.”

Today, Todd is a Senior Project Officer with the NSW Environment Protection Authority. Based in Dubbo with his wife and two daughters, he also serves with Fire and Rescue NSW – working alongside Aboriginal communities to care for Country.

Student Sam's story

Growing up on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait, Samuel dreamed of following in the footsteps of his older brother, Kiyoshi—a 2020 Yalari scholar.

Samuel’s primary school reports revealed a bright, determined student deeply committed to his learning. However, like many children in remote communities, the distance between his local primary school and the specific academic requirements of a leading boarding school was a hurdle he couldn’t clear alone.

Through our application process, we meet many students with this same spark of potential, yet they often lack the transitional support needed to step straight into a Year 7 classroom. In response, Yalari Ready was launched – a pilot program designed to bridge that distance, providing students with the intensive literacy and numeracy foundations they need to thrive at Australia’s leading secondary schools.
