Alumni Todd's story

Growing up on a farm in the outback mining town of Lightning Ridge, Todd Ellis received a Yalari scholarship to Toowoomba Grammar School in 2008 graduating in 2013.

“If I’d stayed in Lightning Ridge, I probably would’ve left school in Year 10 to work on the farm full-time… Lightning Ridge only had a small school and, once in high school, had limited opportunity in and out of school.”

Today, Todd is a Senior Project Officer with the NSW Environment Protection Authority. Based in Dubbo with his wife and two daughters, he also serves with Fire and Rescue NSW – working alongside Aboriginal communities to care for Country.

Student Samirah's story

Samirah’s story begins in Karama, in Darwin’s north, where family, Country and culture have always shaped who she is. As the eldest of her siblings, she has long carried responsibility and leadership. Choosing to attend boarding school meant leaving home, but it also meant stepping into new opportunities. At Scotch College, Samirah is building confidence, independence and a clear sense of where she wants to go.

Today, Samirah is one of 271 Indigenous children from remote and regional Australia supported by Yalari at 23 schools across Australia. Like every Yalari student, she has taken a brave step to pursue education while staying grounded in who she is.

With the right support around her, Samirah is setting her sights high, on school, on sport, and on the future she is working towards.
