THE ROSEMARY BISHOP INDIGENOUS EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

Yalari Scholarships – Since 2005, Yalari has been providing Indigenous children from regional, rural and remote communities across Australia the opportunity to receive a full boarding school scholarship for their entire secondary education.

All Yalari students are recipients of the Rosemary Bishop Indigenous Education Scholarship. Yalari’s Founding Director, Waverley Stanley named the scholarship program in honour of his primary school teacher who supported him in gaining a scholarship to attend Toowoomba Grammar School in Queensland.

Each year, up to 50 Yalari scholarships are offered to Indigenous children who satisfy the selection criteria and are willing to give 100% towards their education. Yalari Scholarships include full boarding and tuition costs at one of Yalari’s partner schools.

Applications are currently closed.  Scholarship applications for students entering Year 7 in 2022 will open 1 January 2021.

WHAT IS SELECTION BASED ON?

The selection of Yalari scholars is based on:

  • Academic effort and school references;
  • Primary school attendance rates;
  • Participation in leadership, sport and extracurricular activities at school and in their communities;
  • Family support to attend boarding school; and
  • Performance in interviews with Yalari and school staff.
APPLICATION PROCESS

Once applications are received, a selection panel will review the applications and a short-list of candidates is identified.  Short-listed candidates are interviewed in their own home with their family.  Based on the outcome of this interview, a recommendation will be made for the candidate and a guardian to attend an interview at the selected Yalari partner school.  Following the school interview and feedback from the school, Yalari will make a decision about whether a scholarship will be awarded.

The selection of our students is carefully planned to ensure a good fit between students and schools.

SCHOLARSHIP INCLUSION & COSTS

All selected Scholarship students will be eligible for a full or part Abstudy allowance. This payment is directed straight to the school and is used to help Yalari cover the tuition and boarding fees at our partner schools. The gap between the Abstudy allowance and the cost of tuition and boarding is made up by Yalari through fundraising, donations and sponsorship. Applications for the Abstudy allowance should be made by the family through Centrelink after a student has been successful in being awarded a Yalari scholarship.

Abstudy pays for student travel to and from school at the beginning and end of each term.
