As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, we’re proud to recognise the invaluable contributions of each of our volunteers. From helping behind the scenes at our Gala Dinners, or supporting students through tutoring, their contributions support Yalari’s mission across the country.
Rosie Gallagher is one of those dedicated volunteers who tutors five Yalari students at Clayfield College in Brisbane as part of our Aspire Academic Program, offering tailored academic assistance to support students with their studies.
“I was first introduced to Yalari through my job at Vanguard Health,” Rosie explains. “Vanguard is a healthcare workforce provider dedicated to supporting rural hospitals, health services, and clinics with skilled nurses and doctors to ensure quality care for all Australians. A key focus of Vanguard Health’s mission is improving equity in healthcare access for Indigenous communities. In line with this commitment, Vanguard partnered with Yalari to sponsor the education of a young Indigenous woman attending St Margaret’s.”
Volunteering an hour of her time every Wednesday evening, Rosie and the students focus on areas where support is needed the most – whether it’s exam revision, subject content, or refining assignments. “We use a mix of study strategies, like drawing diagrams, writing summaries, practicing problems, or reviewing key concepts. We also dedicate time to reviewing and refining any assignments they’re currently working on, helping them develop stronger writing and critical thinking skills along the way.”

Since commencing tutoring with the students two months ago, Rosie has seen a noticeable shift in the group. “I’ve seen their confidence in their own abilities and work steadily increase. A particular focus has been helping them strengthen their organisational skills, making sure they’re keeping track of upcoming assignments, exams, and homework well in advance, so nothing catches them off guard. It’s been really rewarding to see them take more initiative and ownership of their studies, showing leadership and responsibility in how they manage their time and workload.”
Currently studying a Bachelor of Law at the Queensland University of Technology, Rosie was touched that one of the students felt inspired to follow in her footsteps. “One of the students asked what I studied at university. When I told them I was studying Law, they said they’d love to study Law too after they graduate. It was such a simple exchange, but it really stuck with me. It reminded me of the importance of encouragement and support. That moment, and many others like it, continue to motivate me to show up each week.”
This year’s National Volunteer Week theme is ‘Connecting Communities’ – Rosie feels humbled to know that her time spent volunteering actively supports generational change for Indigenous youth. “Education is one of the most powerful tools for creating long term opportunities and self-determination, and being able to support students on that journey feels deeply meaningful.”
