Since 2005 Yalari has provided Indigenous children with life-changing opportunities through our education scholarships for their entire secondary education schooling.
We believe education is the key to generational change and a brighter future for these children from remote, rural and regional areas of Australia. Together with our partner boarding schools and our family of generous supporters, our unique model provides the tools and confidence for these children to reach their goals and achieve.
All Yalari students are recipients of the Rosemary Bishop Indigenous Education Scholarship. Each year, up to 50 scholarships are offered to indigenous children who satisfy the selection criteria and who are willing to give 100% toward their education.
Scholarships include full boarding, school tuition and related costs at one of Yalari’s partner schools. To be eligible, students must be entering their first year of high school.
- The selection of our scholars is based on:
- Academic effort and school references;
- Primary school attendance rates;
- Participation in leadership, sport and extracurricular activities within their communities;
- Family support to attend boarding school and
- Performance interviews with Yalari staff and school staff.
Secondly, Yalari’s unprecedented level of support for students is a key strength and contributes to our high retention rates. We have a passionate team of professionals throughout Australia who support our students, their families and our partner schools on a daily basis.
Personal development, support, and camaraderie are also vital components of our model in nurturing our students and these are addressed through our Camps and specialised weekends whereby our corporate supporters provide mentoring and tutoring.
Once a Yalari student graduates, we provide a formal structure to support them in their transition to higher education, vocational training and employment through our Pathways and Alumni programs.
This includes career guidance in Years 11 and 12, tertiary scholarship support; work experience and mentoring and our Alumni program. We at Yalari are very fortunate to have the expertise and support of corporations like ACCOR, Telstra, Lendlease and Medibank who provide work-experience and placement for our graduates, as they further their education journey.
Our Student Support Officers are an integral to the success and outcomes of our student’s education providing support through effective facilitation and in essence, becoming their friend and mentor and the conduit between parents, school and Yalari.
Their role includes supporting our students at all times reflecting the Yalari core values of Respect, Compassion, Resilience, Inclusiveness and Openness.
The Yalari program is successful but this is due to the valued partnerships and commitment of our generous supporters and volunteers. Simply put, we could not provide our life-changing education program without this support.
