A Message From Llew Mullins

My hope for today, all around the world, is that people can speak up, others will listen, judgment is pushed to the side and people feel respected and understood.

However, I know there is pain as people walk the streets today and that the fear and anger is palpable from generations of trauma and abuse.

I’m a white woman in Australia who is married to an Aboriginal man, has Aboriginal children and grandchildren, works with Torres Strait Islander, Aboriginal and white people in an organization that supports Indigenous children’s education, Yalari, (child, in Birra Gubba language).

Black lives matter every day at Yalari. They are the lives of Indigenous children that we care for with enormous responsibility, humility and with respect. You see, these children are strengthened by their family’s culture, educated at the schools of their choice, and ultimately will have the opportunity to lead our country to be a land of honesty and equality.

What am I doing today? What is my husband doing today? What does a black and white couple do on a day like today?
We go to work.

Waverley left yesterday to travel over 3000 km throughout Queensland to interview 10 children and their families for Yalari scholarship places next year. All up (and when the state borders open) we’ll interview about 90 families over the next few months Australia wide for 50 scholarships in 2021.

And I just interviewed a little one in our office who tells me with pride about her Aboriginal grandmother who is a police officer. She will work today where people are protesting, wearing her uniform with a face mask over her mouth and nose (for safety against COVID-19) painted as the Aboriginal flag.

Do what you need to do today. Be careful, be kind and watch over one another.
