Josh - A Volunteer's Story
As a current University of Queensland Commerce student graduating in the near future, the need for practical experience on your resume is paramount in helping you secure your desired position after Uni. The volunteering role at Yalari was promoted through the UQ Careers website, and the opportunity to gain practical experience whilst supporting a meaningful not-for-profit organisation ensured I had no hesitation in applying. Yalari was very flexible in ensuring the volunteering position fit well around my studies and other work commitments.
I volunteered for about seven weeks and utilised my accounting background to assist the Senior Accountant in tracking the funding from particular sponsors. It has significantly improved my understanding of the relationship between the Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss Statements, and provided me with valuable experience working with the QuickBooks accounting software. It had an almost immediate positive influence on the accounting subjects I was currently enrolled in, as well as unforeseen benefits regarding job applications as I’ve come in contact with a number of corporate managers who had attended a Yalari Fundraising Dinner. Volunteering at Yalari was made particularly special due to the positive working environment that exists there, as everyone I met was extremely welcoming and happy to help me with any problems I encountered. My volunteering experience at Yalari were not only beneficial in gaining practical knowledge to assist my University studies, but also felt very fulfilling in supporting the work that they do. I would eagerly recommend it to any student looking to improve their job prospects whilst supporting a meaningful cause. - Josh Volling
