A Message From Abbey Braithwaite

Sep 29, 2021

Hey, I’m Abbey, I’m a wife and mummy to two little ones Sophia (6) and George (4). I also have three stepchildren 19, 17, and 14. I love the organised chaos that comes with having a big family, there is also something on.

I have been a stay-at-home mum since I had my eldest, Sophia. Before that, I was in the fast-paced recruitment industry. I love spending time with family and friends, going on family beach adventures, Pilates, meditation classes, essential oils, and celebrating the “big little wins” in everyday mum life.

I am very passionate about helping mothers and babies which started with a project of mine, my other Instagram page @stayinghomewithlove”. Having had babies young and before a lot of my friends, I started the page to document my journey and to connect with other mothers. Through this, I have learned so much about motherhood from all different perspectives and have built a community that supports and celebrates one another.

Through my experiences, I have realised that it takes a village to raise a child. Seeing others in my life now taking on the role of a mother, I am drawn to nurture and support them. One day, I was told by a friend that I would be a great “Doula”. Not knowing what that was, I went home and googled it. I felt that while I was reading through the description, I was reading about myself.

I enrolled in the Australian Doula College and studied with them through a 6-day intensive face-to-face course and then completed my modules a few weeks later. It’s amazing what you put your mind to when you are so passionate about something. I then graduated from that course, set up an Instagram page that I put a lot of energy in to and allowed the word to spread through friends and family.

A lot of people ask me what a Doula is, many think they have heard me say a Jeweller which I laugh at a lot at.

So… What is a Doula?

Traditionally, a Doula was a woman offering non-medical support and information to other women and their partners during birth and the post-natal period. ‘Doula‘ is a Greek word for “woman’s aide”.

A Doula is a support and information bank for anyone navigating their way through one of life’s biggest transitions, parenthood.

A doula is a:

• Great listener
• Respectful
• Does not impose their own thoughts and beliefs
• Trusts the client’s instincts
• Acknowledges the power and impact of life’s transitions
• Works with the family and significant others as a valued team member
• Works alongside medical care providers
• Offers continuous support in a non-judgmental safe space
• Empowers you to a positive birthing experience
• Here to nurture and nourish both birthing parents and so much more

Doulas are knowledgeable in comfort measures such as relaxation breathing, massage and positioning, managing labour sensations using water, hot packs and essential oils. Doulas specialise in non-medical skills and do not perform clinical tasks, such as examinations or heart rate monitoring. Many studies in the USA have been conducted and highlighted the huge difference a birth doula can make to a labour and birth. In the USA, UK, and parts of Europe doulas are a recognised part of the birthing team and post-natal services. The doula services fill an important gap for women and their caregivers and have been developed over the years to respond to the ever-increasing requests from women to have more support and continuity of care before, during and after the birth of their beautiful baby’s.

I am forever trying to learn new things and add to my toolbox to help me along this journey. I knew about Hypnobirthing through a few mothers I had spoken to, so did my research and enrolled in with Hypnobirthing Positive Birth program practitioner’s course. I have now completed that, and I’m reaching many women and their partners face to face and even over zoom during these covid times. It’s so rewarding to help inform and empower couples to have a positive birth experience. I feel very blessed to do what I do and believe that when we put our minds to something that we are so passionate about, magic happens.
